5 Signs Your Water Pump Needs Servicing (Before It Fails)

A water pump rarely fails without warning. Most give clear signals for days or weeks before they stop — and catching them early turns an expensive emergency into a simple service. Here are five signs your pump needs attention, and how to prevent a breakdown.

1. A drop in pressure or flow

If taps run weaker than they used to, or your tank takes much longer to fill, your pump is losing performance. Worn impellers, a partially blocked intake, or a failing borehole are common causes. Don’t ignore it — a pump working harder for less output is a pump heading for failure.

2. Strange noises

Grinding, rattling or knocking usually means worn bearings or a damaged impeller. A humming pump that won’t start points to a capacitor or motor fault. Healthy pumps run with a steady, consistent sound; new noises are an early warning worth investigating immediately.

3. Frequent cycling or tripping

A pump that switches on and off rapidly (“short cycling”), or that keeps tripping the breaker, is under stress. The usual culprits are a waterlogged pressure tank, a faulty pressure switch, or an electrical fault. Left alone, short cycling quickly wears out the motor and switchgear.

4. Sputtering air or dirty water

Air spitting from the taps can mean the water level in the borehole has dropped below the pump intake, or there’s a leak in the suction side. Sand or cloudy water suggests the borehole or pump is drawing in grit — abrasive water wears seals and impellers fast.

5. Visible leaks or corrosion

Damp patches around fittings, rust on the pump body, or weeping seals all point to wear. Small leaks waste water and electricity and tend to grow. Corrosion on electrical connections is also a safety risk that should be addressed promptly.

Why genuine spares matter

When a pump is serviced, the parts you fit determine how long the repair lasts. Genuine, warranty-backed impellers, seals, bearings and capacitors are engineered to the original tolerances — non-genuine substitutes often fail within months and can damage the pump further. Always insist on the correct spares for your make and model.

A simple prevention checklist

  • Listen for changes in sound and watch for drops in flow.
  • Check pressure-tank pre-charge and the pressure switch periodically.
  • Make sure dry-run and overload protection are fitted and working.
  • Keep electrical connections clean, tight and dry.
  • Schedule a professional inspection before peak-demand season.
